The Department of Posts will release a commemorative stamp in the city to mark Mother Teresa’s canonisation in the Vatican on September 4.

Mother Teresa will be declared a saint on Sunday. Minister of State for Communications (Independent charge) Manoj Sinha will release the stamp at a function organised at Divine Child High School auditorium here, which would be attended by the Chief Post Master General of Maharashtra and Goa circle, a senior India Post official said.

He said issuing of the stamp is a gesture of respect and gratitude for the Nobel laureate nun for her exemplary humanitarian service towards the mankind. A commemorative stamp is a postage stamp, often issued on a significant date, such as an anniversary, to honour or commemorate a place, event, person or object.

“The decision to release a commemorative stamp on the canonisation for Mother Teresa has been taken by the advisory committee of Philately. September 4 is going to be a special day for India too, the day several other countries are also honouring the great lady,” the official said, adding India has been the ‘karmabhoomi’ of Mother Teresa.

The Vatican had earlier chosen Mumbai-based graphic designer Karen Vaswani’s logo as the official emblem for the canonisation ceremony. Vaswani’s design depicts the classic pose of Mother Teresa looking affectionately at a child whom she holds in her arms.
